TL;DR: Blade of the Iron Throne is the best RPG I've played and you should play it.

I recently picked up a PDF copy of Blade of the Iron Throne, and in the last two weeks it has supplanted D&D as our group's go-to fantasy RPG (though it's Sword and Sorcery, not High Fantasy). I'm here to tell you firsthand how good role-play can really be, and how many problems (primarily with D&D and other d20 clones) this game neatly solves.

Note that I will be doing a lot of comparing to D&D. It's not particular hatred towards D&D, but D&D is the big one that everyone knows and which has spawned countless clones and variations. Settle in, this post is long.

Overview Blade of the Iron Throne (hereafter 'Blade') is a Sword and Sorcery RPG with a heavy focus on role-playing, with a robust and exciting combat system to back it up. You won't find elves and orcs, though there are rules for home brewing within the core book.

The game system uses a d12 dice pool, where the default for success is 7+. There are six primary attributes (such as Cunning, Brawn, etc) with five more that are derived from the primaries (such as Aim, Reflex, etc). There are Skills (akin to D&D) and Assets (similar to Feats, though most have a good side and a bad side).

Character Creation Or: How to stop min-maxing

Blade uses a rather unique system for character creation that makes it nearly impossible to min-max your character, and places heavy emphasis on role-play.

The first step is to select four Passion Attributes. These are story hooks, bits of character history that drive the character into the world. You determine the things that your character aspires to, strives for, what pushes them forward when the going gets tough. These provide bonus dice to any action (combat or non-combat) that would advance one of your passions. Trying to decipher an ancient map to help you track down a legendary relic? Bonus dice to decode it. Guards at the relic's location? Bonus dice to kill them.

The important part of Passions is that the characters discuss them out loud in a group. You aren't contrived friends, people who happened to be at the same pub when the king needed a party of brave adventurers. You use your Passions to tie yourselves together as a team, even if you don't like each other in character.

Once those are settled, you arrange your Priorities. These are the things that build your character. You rank the six in order from A (most important) to F (least important). They are as follows:

• Attributes: Determines how many points you have to spend on your base stats.

• Skills: Determines how many points you have to spend on Skills. -Culture: What type of civilization you come from (Enlightened, Savage, Degenerate, etc). This effects skills, stats, proficiencies, etc.

• Sorcery: How much or little magical influence you have. An 'A' means you are legendary, the highest of high. An 'F' means that you are not only highly susceptible to magic used against you, but that you have a powerful curse on you.

• Proficiencies: How many points you have to spend on weapon and magic proficiency.

• Assets: How many 'Feats' you have to work with. An 'A' grants you 6 positive Assets, while an 'F' burdens you with 3 negative Assets.

What is unique about this approach is that it heavily punishes any attempts to min-max. Since you are required to take E and F options, you have to carefully decide in which manner you want to really hinder your character. So taking high priorities in Proficiencies, Attributes, and Assets means that you are extra sensitive to magic targeted at you, or you're a degenerate with some form of mental disorder (drug addiction, sadism, cannibalism, etc), or something similar.

Attributes There are six of these, outlined below:

• Heart: Your force of character, your charisma, empathy, and ability to understand human and animal nature.

• Brawn: Your muscle, vitality, how hard you hit, and how much beating you can take.

• Tenacity: Strength of persona, ability to focus on tasks, ability to resist being influenced, inner discipline.

• Cunning: Raw instincts, agility, reaction time, balance.

• Daring: Courage and ability to take decisive action. Affects dangerous tasks like climbing and jumping as well.

• Sagacity: Your logic, ability to reason, intuition, sharpness of senses, and judgment.

Unlike many games (most especially D&D), there are no real 'dump stats'. Now you might be thinking 'I'm a warrior! Why would I need Sagacity?' Well I'll tell you why. In addition to its uses for other character types, it affects both your aim and your awareness of your surroundings. Why do you need Cunning? It affects your reflexes and your combat ability. Why do you need Tenacity? It allows you to shrug off pain from your wounds. Daring? Also affects your combat ability, as well as determines in which order you attack and affects if you can hit before your opponent during a combat exchange.

Every stat is important. If not in equal measure, at least to the point that you'll never be able to say 'Eh, I don't need that for anything.'

Sorcery Sorcery in Blade is much less 'study arcane principles in dusty tomes' and much more like witchcraft, voodoo, etc. You don't have fireballs, lightning bolts, invisibility, or telekinesis. If you take Sorcery at a rank C or higher, you have access to things like Prophecy, Curse, Scrying, or even the ability to summon demons.

All spells require rolls, and your pool has to be split into two parts: One to determine success (and how well you succeed), and the other to contain the powers you are harnessing. A poor first roll means you either failed to cast or you cast poorly. A poor second roll means your body becomes tainted by uncontrolled energy and you may cause unintended consequences.

Combat The reason for the season. Combat is exciting, short, and deadly. You don't roll an attack roll, then roll damage. You declare an attack type (thrust, bash, cleave, master strike, murder-stroke, beat, etc), choose where you're attacking (thrust to the face, cleave to the shoulder, master strike to the stomach, etc), and your opponent chooses a defense (block, parry, evade, counter, block open, etc).

Then you roll and see what happens. If you hit, you deal damage depending on the zone and level of success. If you miss (or are blocked, parried, etc), then your opponent takes the aggressive and attacks.

Wounds are also detailed. They deal several effects:

• Blood Loss represents, well, blood loss. You check each round to see if you fall unconscious or die from blood loss.

• Shock represents the mental shock of being struck. On your next exchange, you lose some of your dice pool as a result of shock.

• Pain is the pain from the wound itself. Every turn after the first, you lose dice from your pool. Pain is healed very slowly.

There are no hit points. Each wound causes shock, pain, and/or blood loss. If these drop your dice pool to 0, you obviously can't defend yourself and are likely dead. Every combat we've had so far lasted between 2 and 4 rounds, some even shorter.
